I had the RF concept M-Chassis with CS 3.4 but wasn't used much. So it's time to go back to full size. 

So I pulled together a lot of parts I had lying around and put in a  couple of extras. ie Long Wipers and MST Front Y arms and Hubs.  Love the low look of the drift package.

Just enough blue to be cool.

First bolt together looks promising. Still to adjust ackerman and full lock.

While I wait for the DRB-REW to be completed. I'm back to Full Drift Package Lineup. That's come full circle.

RE-Xtreme DRB-REW Ninja Configuration #002 - pre test

 RE-Xtreme DRB-REW Ninja config is basically the ALL black setup.

REW Ninja Spec is a straight swap from my previous counter-steer Mid Engine - DRB into the prototype chassis.

I was certain that I would need a little more steering angle from my current setup, so the front knuckles will be replaced. but for now it's only 'just' capable on our super polished concrete surface but carpet is fine. 

The remainder of the chassis has a few changes. Rear BD-7 Ball Diff and some gearing changes will result in a high level. new rear springs also on the way.

Distribution is just where I want it.

 I have a few minor chances underneath. the omission of a few hole and inclusion of a few more. mainly for the Servo and battery mounts.

The new design battery mount will include the facility for the Yokomo Lipo holders

So tomorrow... more testing...

RE-Xtreme DRB-REW Ninja Configuration #002

Welcome to the dark side...

I only just bolted this together and had to share...

All Black Anodized Aluminium DRB+ Full Overdose Upgrades.

 GRK Slide rack on steering duty. 4 front end configurations are available. DP wiper mounts, GRK Rack mounts, DRb mounts and DRb reverse mounts.

Another capability of the DRB-REW in use here is the Dp Type C support front and rear brace setup. It means you can run the Wrap up type upper A-arm mounts or OD mounts. Replaces the previous V2 premium upper mounts in the previous config..  


Centre mount servo and a whole bunch of custom parts for your style of setup.

Once I test the 4 configurations and make some changes. Limited production run will commence.

Yokomo Custom Chop Shop

The long road to RWD development and a bit of CS on the side.

At the moment, I feel I can say that I've tried a lot in the RC drift scene. At times you lose motivation and search for new directions. RWD has been one. Running on different surfaces is always fun too.


Has it come full circle? The plastic Drift package with a few mods proves the point that you can still have cheap fun. I remember my first RWD chassis was gyro less and was a good starting point. But it soon evolved in the search for THE setting. Trying all sorts of combos before embracing the electronic steering rack. aka Gyro.

I still have 2 Drift package chassis. There is simply soo much development in these things they can't be ignored in the drift scene.

The RWD Drift Master version of the drift package has been a benchmark for me. Capable but still not absolutely perfect. But it too has been a development chassis and still is.


I've been through about 10x 4wd chassis, from super high Counter Steer Ratios, Low counter Fast chassis, Slow Chassis, Flickable, Stable, whatever. Each has had it's own style while still evolving through the available parts catalog.

But what happens when the parts catalog doesn't have what you want.
 

You have to build. these days we have the means to do most things we want. 3d printers and 5-axis machine tools. but as hobbyists, we can rarely afford the cost of setup for small production. So I though a lot about what might be possible with evolution and not outright replacement. As I have a heavy investment in Yokomo machines, I couldn't really justify replacing them all.

So evolution is the key. Rear-drive Evolution Weight-shift.

I am so far very very pleased with result of the DRB-REW prototype. I had so much fun driving it, I forget that I'm supposed to be testing stuff. 

Small companies, like Guild n One, TN Racing, Overdose, RC-926 and others inspire and all play their role in creating something special. 
 

 So while I am only making the chassis plates, every resulting chassis will be very bespoke as hobbyists like ourselves use their current pride and joy chassis and evolve it into something else.

While the original machine is hardly recognizable to a stranger, we still can take pride in opening that original box and knowing that we have evolved the chassis into something bespoke.

The builder of this black machine was the one who got me thinking more about chassis evolution. It was a MUST HAVE purchase that encapsulated so many of the ideas that I already wanted to evolve into my own DRBs.

To say I was inspired is an understatement. it totally changed the way I thought about tuning. So I've taken this concept and evolved again with many more modern influences while keeping true to Yokomo's image.

So the next time you see this black Ninja... it will have evolved again into my REW prototype config.

Is it still Yokomo? Well 30% maybe.

A Zillion Overdose Upgrades!

Are you the kind to keep things status quo or evolve with the new? I'm kind of in between.

In the past I have purchased items that create a complete and current top shelf machine upgraded and swapped parts to have the constant evolution of the latest settings.

Well this chassis was at the point where it was perfectly good enough to "play" with pretty much anyone.
and over the last 3 years I haven't felt the need to evolve this particular chassis.

Instead using my Blue and Red Overdose DRB Chassis to evolve up to 5.0xFCD and try all sorts of craziness.

Purchasing this Custom Black Guild'nOne based machine showed a few new ideas from someone else who had continued the constant evolution path, So I'm effectively skipping a generation here. 

Right now, I have 4 well sorted Full Counter 4WD drift machines that function very well. So changing out $300 worth of perfectly good overdose and team suzuki polished and anodised C-Hub front suspension is a big choice.

But the above machine works so well, I'm migrating the silver machine to be a closer match. 

Especially when the replacement is also $300 worth of Yokomo, Overdose, Zillion and Wrap up next.

Overdose Drift Package lower arm is increased to allow a 3mm shaft so it's perfect for the standard DRB.
But the main feature of any Y-Arm setup is the capability for more steering angle and lower scrub radius.

Scrub is always something that has annoyed me with +12 rims disappearing behind the wheel well. 

Not being part of the "competitive" scene allows you some time to see what has been and is still great. And pick up some second hand barely used parts that still offer more. You can also reduce the cost... unless the discontinued items are super desirable.

Building some flexibility into my chassis, Narrow Scrub radius, More steering angle etc, I have gone for items found on my already awesome Black "Ninja" chassis. Zillion knuckles offer more than enough flexibility.

I've used the yokomo V2 Upper mount, Plastic items will be replaced by WUN upper arms in the next few days. This weekend, I'll be breaking out the de-anodising methods for knuckles, one way, upper mount and other items I've neglected like a new rear spool and more.  

 So the temporary setting is back together... before a full strip, clean and rebuild.

Then the Silver Typhoon will soon be even more capable.

Then once the DRB - REW prototype is set and the final chassis layout is set... I may even be replacing the replaced.

One thing is certain... Evolution is expensive.

Double Dose

Can you really overdose?

Full OD can lead to craziness.

These two machines were both a long build process.

One sourced from parts upon new release and the other sourced from hunting for those discontinued pieces. 

The owner of this Drift Package is currently in setup phase. Still getting know how the long running Yokomo chassis works with the OD upgrades.

But my DRB is well and truly setup. It's my style machine. Big angle CS with crazy camber.

When these two are side by side, it's a good thing that these showcase level chassis are both ripe for abuse.

There's still a lot of cleanup that I'd like to do on my long run DRB and I have some components ready.

But I don't think I can ever match the sheer number of Overdose logos on this drift package. So why not add that one extra.

Deconstructing the Samurai

My DRBs all have their own style... The RED Armour chassis I name Samurai.

This full Overdose chassis is one that always makes me happy. I use it for fun battles but to accommodate that, it still has to perform

High CS ratio of 3.2:1 and full Keyence power train allows for more than enough control. But it's time to upgrade and maintain a few things.

So the first thing to go was the chassis plate. The look of the naked frame is quite interesting.

But not to stop there. As more and more parts were removed... I started to map out the components. Some of the items up for replacement are the front knuckles. The narrow scrub front end works very well, But can I get that in Red? probably not. so some re-anodised parts will be installed.

Laying out the components was fun for a while...but I soon tired of that and only disassembled one side. No wonder I don't do this very often...

BUT...

I still have 3 more to disassemble...!!!!! Yikes!!! I know as I have swapped components around, I have stolen some of the long CVD axles, bearing and setup items for my main chassis.

So this massive project means documenting what I actually have and recompiling the best chassis I can.

But it still makes for a nice photograph... 

I was also left with the guts sprawling over the table.

And these shiny items are still the bling de resistance.

Overdose Chassis plates accommodate, battery position, Drift Package or DRB suspension and at the time added belt stabilizer position and larger spur cutouts.  Functional and pretty.

So with 3 more to go... I need a rest.
